Working Experience

Working Experience Is Indispensable

Unique Working Experience

Working experience is a core part of our training programmes and what makes our training programmes unique is that, we don’t just train students; rather, we train them and make sure that they have developed professional hands-on experience in the lessons that they are taught.

One of the objectives of TTCJN is to help students to gain real working experience whilst still in school.

The emphasis here is WORKING experience. So it is not like the classroom style of training whereby one comes to sit down and expects someone to come and tell him/her all that (s)he needs to know and afterwards, the person will memorize everything and reproduce it during exams.

Here, the Telescope (trainee) is supposed to practice everything that (s)he has been taught. So (s)he will be doing some kind of work in the form of assignments. As (s)he executes the assignments, (s)he learns and gains the experience.

So the working experience is like an internship in a company whilst the person is still in school.

In addition to the internal assignments, there are opportunities for external internships and field exposures.

Evidence Of Working Experience

Three Different Portfolios

Another reason why we focus on working experience is that, it makes it possible and easy for students to take advantage of opportunities. There are several opportunities out there that as a student one can take advantage of, even before graduating. However, to be able to do that, one needs the right people to guide and direct him/her. So that is where we come in.

Each student who joins TTCJN is trained and guided by seasoned mentors and coaches. The mentoring and coaching is done in such a way that, (s)he will be able to build three different portfolios that will make him/her very valuable and position him/her well to be able to take advantage of opportunities. A portfolio is like a CV or resume for a specific aspect of one’s life. So the three different portfolios we help our trainees to build are:

  • A Professional Portfolio (related to the course the person is studying in school).
  • An Interest Portfolio (related to something that the person is passionate about).
  • A Social Work Portfolio (related to the person’s volunteerism and selflessness activities).

TTCJN AND TMA DESIGN

Training + Portfolio Building = 2 Years

There are four training programme modules that our trainings cover :

Journalism, Writing, Entrepreneurship and NGO Work.

So we have working experience opportunities in all those four areas for our Telescopes (trainees). A Telescope can choose any of them that he/she is interested in and afterwards, the person will first of all be taken through training programme for 1 year by The Telescope Training And Mentorship Academy (TMA). Then, (s)he will practice what (s)he has learnt and gain working experience for another 1 year.

So in all the training and working experience will take 2 years.

When one successfully completes the two years, (s)he will be given an international certificate from us. If (s)he chose more than one programme, then (s)he can receive two, three or even four certificates from us. This has been well explained on our Trainings page.

In short, membership in TTCJN is in two stages.

  • First a trainee will go through training for 1 year. (The training component will be handled by our training academy called The Telescope Training and Mentorship Academy (TMA)).
  • Then (s)he will practice for another year to gain working experience. (After The Telesscope TMA is done with the trainee, (s)he will practice as a member of TTCJN to gain working experience).

Working Experience In Each Programme

Working Experience Of Programmes

  • Print Media: Real working experience as a reporter, journalist, content manager, editor etc.
  • Electronic Media: Real working experience as a TV reporter, newscaster, producer, director etc.

Print And Electronic Media Experience

With the Journalism Training, trainees get taught how to become real journalists whereby they will know how to get news, do field reports and interviews, get statistics and even how they can use their camera phones to do video reports. It is more or less like an internship in a media company, whilst still in school.

The media training of TTCJN covers both the print and electronic media. Trainees gain real working experience in TV, radio, web and newspaper production.

We have our own media platform known Campus Fila. It has different versions – TV , radio, website and newspaper. Trainees get the opportunity to practice on all the different platforms to gain working experience in each version. We also have partnerships with various media houses where trainees periodical visit to experience how they also operate professionally.

Writing - Working Experience

With the writing, we start with blogging and teach trainees how to be a versatile bloggers. That means, they will be able to write on any kind of topic without breaking a sweat; even if they are not so familiar with the topic area. Most importantly, they get to know how to write articles and stories that will be plagiarism-free.

There are many, many ways that one can become successful through writing.  However, one needs to learn the tricks of the trade and that is exactly what our writing programme has been designed to do for those who will join us because of writing.

This aspect of our training has been designed to unearth writing talents among our members. Members get groomed to be very good writers and end up taking up careers in book writing, blogging, as a columnist for a newspaper etc. They also get to understand the technicalities of writing different genres of articles.

  • They are taught SEO Article Writing, WordPress and how to actually write and publish on a website.
  • Additionally, they are taught how to write different kinds of stories and articles as well as how to publish their books and even make money from their writings.
  • Telescopes (trainees) write their own business plans and build successful businesses based on the business plans that they write.
  • They get partners that they can start real companies with even as they are in school.
  • They learn about pitching and how to present their business ideas to potential investors so that they can get some funding.

Entrepreneurship Working Experience

The entrepreneurship programme, is practical and experience-oriented from day 1 because, it is intended to help trainees to build real companies by the time they are done with the programme. Telescopes (trainees) get to know how to write business plans and business proposals. They also get to understand how best to design and write their marketing plans, operational plans, financial plans and growth and development plans. Then they learn how to iterate the plans several times as they build their real companies.

By thus, they gain experience in Business Partnership Formation and social media marketing as well as all the different aspects of business that one needs to understand in order to succeed as a business person. With all that knowledge and experience, they are given the opportunity to write entrepreneurship articles to educate the public on certain aspects of entrepreneurship. These articles then get published on the Campus Fila platforms. Aside the practical avenues available for the entrepreneurship trainees, there are also internship opportunities in The Telescope organization as well as in other external organizations all aimed at helping the upcoming entrepreneurs to gain real working experience.

NGO Work Experience

NGO work is for those who desire to help people and make social impact through their works. Some trainees are usually interested in setting up their own NGOs whilst others too have the willingness to work in already established NGOs. Here too, the NGO Work training programmme is practical and experience-oriented from day 1. This is because, it is intended to help trainees to build real NGOs by the time they are done with the programme.

Trainees  learn about NGO structural design and fundraising. They iterate their business plans until their NGO is very solid and feasible. As they keep adjusting their business plans and execute projects and programmes, they gain the needed experience.

Trainees get to understand whether they should convert their organizations into Social Enterprises or they should maintain them as NGOs. Because, an NGO is similar to a company. But the difference is that, whilst a company’s main focus is to make money, an NGO’s objective is to make an impact in society. Trainees get to understand all that and are able to make the right choices and take the right decisions.

  • With the knowledge and skills a Telescope (trainee) will acquire, (s)he can start his/her own NGO and become the Executive Director.
  • Upon graduating from the programme, one can start consulting for other NGOs with the NGO knowledge acquired, whereby one will offer services in fundraising and NGO management and get paid.
  • One can also organize training seminars.

Our Volunteerism Programmes

  • Education: Edu-Mentor Volunteerism Programme.
  • Health: Community Health Outreach Programme.
  • Environment: Campus Impact Recycling Programme.
  • Global Issues: Selected SDGs

Volunteerism Experience

Our Volunteerism Programmes have been designed to inculcate the spirit of selflessness and patriotism in all our members, so as to help them to make an impact in society and also to make them more patriotic to their respective countries.

In Ghana, we are working with the Government of Ghana in all our volunteerism programmes. Hence, our volunteerism certificate for the Ghana Chapter members is co-signed by the Ghana government representative either from the Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education or Environmental Protection Agency, depending on which of our volunteerism activities the Telescope (Trainee) partakes in. It is the same with all the other countries that we operate in.

One can also get scholarship and sponsorship opportunities to go and do his/her Masters outside the country or locally. Furthermore, a volunteering record from such a prestigious programme will definitely add more weight to a Telescope’s CV and enhance his/her employability.

Training And Results

Our objective is to train and mentor each Telescope (trainee) so that (s)he will gain professional skills and build professional career portfolios. Additionally, (s)he will build networking portfolios in any of our focus; thus, enhancing his/her value. The whole programme lasts for two years, during which the Telescope (trainee) receives training through our facilitators, mentors and coaches. We have carefully designed training curricula and Telescopes undertake real practical projects and assume real roles in order to gain real working experience, management skills, leadership skills and entrepreneurial skills.

Trainees Prepare For Opportunities

Opportunities Out There

We believe our decision to incorporate working experience into our trainings is a very positive one. This is because we are tackling graduate unemployment, which is a very major issue for most economies of the world. There appears to be a lack of opportunities and jobs out there for the teaming youth who constantly graduate from the various tertiary institutions on a constant basis. However, there are several opportunities out there that a student can take advantage of even before or after graduating. The only requirement in most cases is that, firstly the person needs to be skilled enough to execute the tasks and responsibilities that come with the said opportunities. But more often than not, most graduates lack the requisite skills or working attitude needed for such opportunities.

So it’s not that there are no jobs out there in the world.

The problem is that, most people are not skilled enough to take up some of the available jobs.

One may be passionate and ambitious about his future aspirations. However, passion alone is not enough for one to qualify for the opportunities that abound in the world. One also needs to be knowledgeable and skilled enough to show that (s)he understands what (s)he is passionate about.

So our objective for taking students through our chosen programmes, is to train them for them to gain professional skills as well as build professional portfolios for themselves, so as to enhance their value. As they do that, they gain real working experience whilst still in school.

We Offer Internships

Internships And Other Opportunities

Our objective is not just to give our trainees the training and say goodbye to them for them to then start struggling to find their feet. As part of our intention to give trainees working experience, we have internship opportunities at the headquarters of The Telescope International.

During the vacations, trainees who did well during the semester training sessions, are given the opportunity to come to the headquarters of the organization to have their internships with us.

Now, aside the internship and other internal opportunities that we give to trainees, there are several other opportunities that come up daily. Some are local and others are international. Our intention is to make it possible for our trainees to take advantage of as many of those opportunities as possible. So each of our training programmes has been designed to achieve that purpose.
