Chapter 7

Echoes Of The Sacred ‘Ofor’

What Happened Beyond The Stony Path?

It took Young and the old man twenty minutes, to accomplish their mission and head back home. As the two men approached the stony path, they had passed on their way earlier, Young knew he could find his bearing back to the old man’s house from there, as he had taken it as a landmark.

“Come on, I want you to see this”, the old man said, sheering into the path from where they had come. Young gave a wan nod and followed him for another fifteen minutes, down the path and they eventually branched off the stony path unto a path that seemed less trodden, as weeds grew in the way. As the pair hurried on, Young began to sense a faint shriek up ahead. The cry got more and more pronounced with every step. It was coming from the end of the pathway.

“What is that noise and where is it from?” Young asked with a yell. He didn’t have to wait for a response, for he stopped dead in his tracks gaping at the building that loomed before them. The building before them was enormous. It was reminiscent of any building he had ever seen or read about in his life. Projecting into the sky, twenty feet above sea level, it was the first and only skyscraper of their time. The building was fully made of bricks and had a circular structuring but with the roofing practically non-existent.

The cry echoed out from the top like an active volcano. As they approached the entrance of the building, the cry became almost deafening. An engraved slab before the building answered one of Young’s questions: The Brick Cathedral. “A church?” Young asked, quite certain he was right. The old man did not answer. He was leaning forward, busily unlocking the latch on the huge steel gate. It gave a loud crack and opened into a huge hallway.

Young followed the old man into a voluminous main lobby. He looked around in the dark, trying to bring his eyes to adjust to the darkness that engulfed them.

The air smelled of dust and smog, and the cry from before still filled the air. “Is there a lamp or torch somewhere?” He asked, looking around.  “Just follow me”, was the old man’s reply. They hurried on up some marble stairs. They reached the zenith of the stairs and ended up before a heavier and tightly secured steel gate. The cry is emanating from the other side of the door. “Kam bata kam bata, mepe uzo kam bata,” the old man chanted. He said some other prayers and like magic, the door slides open. In that same instance, the deafening sound ceased abruptly.

The old man and guy young entered. Beyond the room was mayhem. Light from the moon illuminated the room directly from above, throwing circular shadows across the walls and down to the marble floor. The room was a lushly adorned renaissance library complex, complete with inlaid bookshelves, animal skin carpets, and colourful paintings…. and yet it looked so dejected and unwelcoming.
